Nestled along the scenic Kennebunk River in the coastal town of Kennebunkport, Maine, Cape Arundel Golf Club is one of New England’s most historic and beloved golf courses. Founded in 1896, the club is among the oldest golf institutions in the United States and has become synonymous with the rich golfing heritage of Maine. What began as a small club created by summer residents seeking a local place to play has evolved into a nationally recognized destination that blends history, tradition, and world-class golf.

Originally established as the Kennebunkport Golf Club, Cape Arundel was founded at a time when golf was still a relatively new sport in America. The course was later redesigned and expanded in the early 1920s by renowned golf architect Walter J. Travis, whose vision transformed it into the distinctive links-style course seen today. Travis carefully crafted each hole to provide both strategic challenge and natural beauty, utilizing the property's rolling terrain, tidal creeks, and riverfront setting.

One of the defining characteristics of Cape Arundel is its modest length. At just under 6,000 yards from the back tees, it is significantly shorter than many modern championship courses. However, golfers quickly discover that length is not what makes Cape Arundel memorable. The course is famous for its small, undulating greens, strategic bunkering, and clever design that rewards precision over power. Strong coastal winds and changing tidal conditions along the river add another layer of challenge, ensuring that no two rounds feel exactly the same.

Cape Arundel's reputation extends far beyond its architecture. The club is closely associated with the Bush family, particularly former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, who spent many summers in nearby Kennebunkport and was a longtime member. The historic clubhouse, originally built in 1900, was renamed “41 House” in his honor in 2011. The club has also welcomed numerous notable figures over the years, including presidents, athletes, and golf legends such as Phil Mickelson, Arnold Palmer, and Babe Ruth.

The course's historic significance was formally recognized in 2009 when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Cape Arundel remains a private club that welcomes public play, allowing visitors to experience one of Maine’s premier golfing destinations. The club consistently earns recognition from leading golf publications, including rankings among the best courses in Maine and the top courses accessible to the public in the United States.

What truly sets Cape Arundel apart is its character. Rather than relying on dramatic elevation changes or overwhelming length, the course offers a timeless golfing experience rooted in strategy, tradition, and natural beauty. Its riverside setting, historic clubhouse, and thoughtful design create an atmosphere that feels both elegant and welcoming. More than a century after its founding, Cape Arundel Golf Club continues to represent the enduring appeal of classic American golf and remains one of Maine’s most treasured sporting landmarks.
